The Terps Makeathon is a design hackathon hosted at the University of Maryland. Organized comepltely by UXTerps, the first student-run UX organization at UMD. The non-stop hackathon event took place over the course of two days; which the enabled students from various backgrounds, disciplines & universities, to come together and apply their design skills to solve real-world problems. The competition is intended to promote creativity, collaboration and design thinking.
CommunicateHealth, a Makeathon sponsor, requested that the competitors reimagine how MedlinePlus.gov presents health and wellness information, and shares it with patients and their families. More specifically, they invited the contestants to identify a new model for the design of MedlinePlus health topic web pages as well as present strategies for ensuring that this digital content is accessible, sharable and allows for engagement within for low health literacy populations.
How might we reimagine the way MedlinePlus health topics are presented and shared digitally with users?
We used methods such as personas, concept testing, and prototying in order to attain our goals of redesigning and modernizing the MedlinePlus web page as well as introducing an intuitive way of displaying health-related information with a focus on:
